Theater Etiquette for seeing A Broadway show

01. Do not record the show.

It is literally illegal - so don’t do it. Plus there is almost nothing more distracting to an actor than looking out into the audience during a scene and seeing someone recording them. I don’t think many people realize this, but if you’re sitting in the orchestra section the actors can usually see you!! Having your phone out is especially dangerous for the actors because the stage lights can reflect off metal devices and blind them.

02. Turn off your phone.

There is practically nothing worse as an audience member (or an actor) than trying to pay attention to what’s happening on stage and being distracted by someone texting a few rows in front of you. Or even worse - when someone’s phone ringer goes off during a quiet moment in the show.

03. Stay silent.

Everyone, including you, payed a lot of money to experience a Broadway show, so please don’t talk during the performance and please don’t sing.

04. Be respectful.

Please be kind and respectful to everyone you interact with at the theatre, especially the front of house staff. Don’t try to cut in line when trying to enter the theatre, say please and thank you, and be courteous to the patrons around you. Also, if you must go to the bathroom during the show, wait until the end of a song.
